Topics include descriptions of routine camp life, some skirmishes and battles such as Bristoe Station, people and countryside near Chambersburg, Pa., and his feelings on love, war, death, and religion. Also references to disarray after Gettysburg, wife's visits to camp, his brothers in the army, Vance's visit during gubernatorial campaign (1864), and dinner with Generals Lee and Hill. Letters from Congressman Scales in Washington, D.C., to wife during her absences include comments on other congressmen and their wives at their boardinghouse, church services (Presbyterian, Catholic, Swedenborgian), ladies' fashions, tedium of congressional sessions, gossip (a presidential scandal), a murder trial, the second Mrs. Z. B. Vance, campaigning, aged parents, and problems at home. Many letters from adopted daughter Kate Lewis Scales at Peace Institute in Raleigh (Dec., 1876-June, 1878) concern homesickness, teachers, students, studies, rules, social life, vocal lessons, and concerts. A letter from Scales's mother describes murder of Adolphus Moore by George W. Swepson in Haw River, 1876. Several letters (1888-1897) from nephew Archibald Henderson Scales, naval officer, were written in ports of Japan, China, Korea, Siam, and Chile describing navy life, cities, people, customs, and political unrest. Also speech by Scales on the Battle of Fredericksburg (printed, 1883) and his commencement address at Wilson Collegiate Institute on women's rights (1887). Other correspondents include John P. Bachelder, Kemp P. Battle, J. C. Birdsong, Henry Grove Connor, A. S. Merrimon, W. S. Stronach, and Gen. and Mrs. A. P.
