The papers are gathered in nine series: Family Correspondence, 1912-1948; Military Correspondence, 1925-1941; Newspaper Correspondence; Correspondence with Organizations; Unofficial Diplomatic Diaries and Papers; Business Papers; Miscellaneous. Papers; Foster Family Papers, 1828-1924; and Photographs and Oversized Documents. These are followed by a small postcard collection. Josephus Daniels, Jr. was educated in the Horner Military School (Oxford, N.C.) and the Tome School (Port Deposit, Md.). Daniels served as captain of Marines during World War I and World War II. After World War I he was advertising manager of the family newspaper, The News and Observer, and subsequently was business manager of the company until his retirement at the close of 1959 (thereafter, chairman of the board). Daniels was one of the organizers of the Carolinas Advertising Executives in 1938 and served as director of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association. He maintained a lifelong involvement in the American Legion, serving as the commander of the Raleigh post, as State Commander (1935); as Grand Chef de Gare for the Societe des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux, and as a member of the Legion's National Publications Committee (1948-1952). After his marriage in 1926, Daniels became actively involved in programs.of the YMCA and served as president of the state organization in 1938. He served on the board of directors of the Raleigh Merchants' Association when the Harvest Ball (now the Debutante Ball) was inaugurated. He was a lifelong Rotarian, and a member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church. Evelina Foster McCauley Daniels was the granddaughter of Robert C. and Martha E. Bradford Foster of Nashville, Tennessee. She was educated in the Hume-Fogg High School and Vanderbilt University (at which she was member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority). Upon graduation in 1919, she first taught French and Spanish in Gallatin, Tennessee, then joined the staff of The Nashville Banner (of which her uncle and guardian, Edgar M. Foster, was business manager). Josephus Daniels, Jr., met her at a newspaper convention in Chicago in October, 1925, and after a whirlwind courtship, they were married in April, 1926. Following a honeymoon at Atlantic City, Mrs. Daniels took her place in the social and civic life of Raleigh. She immediately organized the Junior Guild (recast as the Junior League of Raleigh in 1930), and thereafter continued to play an active role in both local and state civic and charitable organizations: the Woman's Club of Raleigh, the Children's Home Society of North Carolina, the PTA, the YWCA, the Civic Music Board, Rex Hospital Guild, the Cotillion Club, and so forth. Although she was brought up as a Presbyterian and had been active (as most of her family had been) in Presbyterian affairs in Nashville, after her marriage Mrs. Daniels became a Methodist and was a member of the altar guild of Edenton Street United Methodist Church and an honorary member of the board of stewards. For the most part, these papers are a fragmentary survival of a much greater whole. While it is true that the family probably engaged in little correspondence with one another during the years when all were present in Raleigh, and while it is true that there is a fairly full sequence of letters during the period when the elder Mr. and Mrs. Daniels were absent in Mexico, the almost total lack of correspondence between 1942 and 1945 when Mr. and Mrs. Daniels, Jr.., were in Washington, D.C., and Mr. and Mrs. Daniels, Sr., were in Raleigh, suggests the letters are far from complete. The greater fragmentation, however, occurs in the area of business correspondence, correspondence concerning organizations, and so forth; here the correspondence is little more than representative, and is generally limited to the years prior to 1942. The fullest non-family correspondence will be found in the American Legion correspondence."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"7 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["Josephus.
