Correspondence (mostly 1881-1888) includes political letters about Democratic party strategy and Sen. Z. B. Vance's campaign (1882), need for Democratic newspaper in Raleigh, and elections of 1888 and 1890. Letters from Thomas J. Jarvis concern building the Executive Mansion; state politics, urging Saunders to run for governor in 1888; and life in Brazil, mentioning dealings there with Hinton Rowan Helper. Correspondence with Jefferson Davis concerns foreword to Moore's Roster (1882). Many letters concern copying of documents in England and America for publication in the Colonial Records; there are also transcripts of some letters and newspaper articles (1777-1780). Letters about UNC from President Kemp P. Battle and others include comments on tuition, salaries, teacher training courses, hazing, escheats, building Memorial Hall, and degrees given during Reconstruction; there is also a faculty petition on literary societies. A letter from Shoe Heel (Robeson Co.) concerns efforts by Negroes to form a military company and get arms from the state (1882). Family papers include deeds (1729-1849) for land in Bertie, Edgecombe, Halifax, Martin, and Washington counties, some belonging to James Smith and Simmons Jones Baker; letter from Maj. Joseph H. Saunders, prisoner of war on Johnson's Island, Ohio (1865); pencil sketch of the Battle of Ream's Station; a scrapbook (1859-1865); school reports on niece and nephew at Oxford Female Seminary and the Horner School in Oxford (1883-1885); and family letters, some genealogical. Other correspondents include Rufus Barringer, Richard H. Battle, W. H. S. Burgwyn, Paul C. Cameron, Julian S. Carr, Joseph B. Chesire, Jr., William H. H. Cowles, Richard B. Creecy, Graham Daves, Joshua W. Gore, Peter M. Hale, Franklin P. Hobgood, James H. Horner, Charles C. Jones, Hamilton C. Jones, Thomas S. Kenan, Lucius Q. C. Lamar, Augustus Leazar, John Manning, Paul B. Means, Samuel F. Phillips, Frederick Phillips, Matt W. Ransom, Thomas Ruffin, Jr., W. Noel Sainsbury, David Schneck, Cornelia P. Spencer, Charles M. Stedman, Z. B. Vance, Francis P. Venable, Alfred M. Waddell, Calvin H. Wiley, George T. Winston.  Papers in the collection relating to Thomas Burke include board bills in Philadelphia (1779-1781); drafts by Burke of statement to General Assembly concerning Articles of Confederation (1779) and of his \"Idea of an American Constitution\" (n.d.); a petition for clothing from N.C. Continental officers on parole (1782); and letter from \"Betsey\" with Burke sonnet on reverse. Miscellaneous papers include the Bute Co. Association (1776); items relating to Abner Nash, including deeds from Joseph Montfort (1775) and bill of sale to Nash for the ship North Carolina (1782); page from journal of a Chatham Co. foundry (1777); instructions from Alexander Martin about some clothing and coffee (1782); extract from orders for policing elections in Pitt Co. (1868); and copy of 1881 will leaving Orange Co. land to Protestant [Episcopal] Diocese of N.C.
