If the court sided with the accuser and executed them, the person who enslaved these men and women could petition the General Assembly of North Carolina for compensation. Since men, women, and children forced into this position were treated as commodities, the enslavers were able to receive payment for the loss of the enslaved person's life based on their purported value.
