Espy dated May 20, 1851. Vance had previously written to Espy to declare his love for her. In this letter he reacts to a letter from her in which she politely rejected his advances. He closes his letter by asking for his correspondence with her back, offering to send her letters back to her, and asking if he can still visit her as a friend. Also included is a note from Vance to Espy in which he states that he is sending along a gold ring as a token of his esteem and asks that, as a favor to him, she accept it. This item is part of the private correspondence of Zeb Vance, Confederate colonel, governor (1862-1865, 1877-1879), and U.S. senator (1879-1894), and of his first wife Harriett Espy.
