He entered the University of Southwestern Louisiana (present-day University of Louisiana at Lafayette) high school early admission program when he was a junior in high school, and enrolled full-time at the college upon his graduation from high school. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June 1972. Nacoste attended basic training at Orlando Naval Training Center in Orlando, Florida. After completing his training, he served as a clerk-typist with the Air Anti-Submarine Squadron 27 aboard the USS Intrepid (CV-11), an Essex-class aircraft carrier. He then served with the Air Anti-Submarine Squadron 21 aboard the USS Independence (CV-62), a Forrestal-class supercarrier. An African American sailor, Nacoste was present when a race riot occurred aboard his Navy ship in January 1973. Nacoste was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1976. He reached the rank of E-5, Personnelman, Second Class, during his military service. After his discharge from the military, Nacoste earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Florida in 1978, and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1982. In 1988, he became a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C. Nacoste is the author of the following books: Making Gumbo In the University (2010); Howl of the Wolf (2012); and Taking on Diversity: How We Can Move from Anxiety to Respect (2015).
