He says that they left Charleston on the 17th and got within 40 miles of Fayetteville before they heard that it had been captured by Yankees. They've been marching for a long time in rainy weather, but have not been in a battle yet. He is currently in a group of two or three hundred men from the Charleston ironclads but there is no Confederate Navy for them to go to now except in Virginia.
