Buxton, Episcopal clergyman of Fayetteville, and his son, Superior Court Judge Ralph P. Buxton, member of state constitutional conventions of 1865 and 1875 and Republican candidate for governor (1880). Paper of the former are his certificate of ordination by Bishop Ravenscroft (1827) and his book of expenditures and credits (1835-1845) recording gifts to churches and charities, travels to conventions, workmen's accounts, church charity accounts (1840-1841), and expenses of his children at school, university, and seminary in New York and North Carolina. Pertaining to Ralph P. Buxton are his appointment as judge by Governor Holden (Aug., 1865), Raleigh newspapers reporting his election (Dec., 1865) and his speech against imprisonment for debt (1866), and letters from Holden and C. H. Brogden (1874). Also included are an invitation to the Lafayette Ball in Fayetteville (1825); stock certificate for the Joint Stock Confederate Publishing Company; permit to visit Negro families (1865); and an indexed book of newspaper clippings on state and national party politics (1854-1857), especially the American (Know-Nothing) Party, including published party platorms and resolutions, letters of acceptance from nominees and refusal from Kenneth Rayner, speech by George E. Badger on Kansas-Nedraska bill, and constitution of a Know-Nothing secret society, with penciled comments on that party.
