William H. Polk (1815-1862), brother of President Polk, Democratic congressman from Tennessee, and Unionist; and of her parents and her two sons, William H., Jr. and Tasker. The earliest correspondnece (1788-1845) is that of the Williams family of Halifax (later Warren) Co. and their relatives the Alstons concerning plantations, value of currency, preparations in Boston against the French in 1798, move by part of family to Ten- nessee (1807) and travels to Alabama to Tennessee (1823-1853), purchase of western lands, Troy Seminary, N.Y. (1835-1843), Long- wood Academy (1841), and Randolph-Macon College (1843). Letters to Major Polk concerning the Mexican War include one from Samuel Colt about his pistols (1847), one describing attempt to capture Santa Anna, a petition for compensation from inhabitants of a Mexican town, detailing its sack by Texas Rangers, and later comments (1853) on General Scott's actions in that war. Letters from 1850 to 1861 in- clude several to Lucy Williams from admirers such as John W. Ellis, George Stoneman, and J.C. Dobbin, and descriptions of life in Ports- mouth and Port Ocracoke, Washington, D.C., Austin, Tex., and Nashville, Tenn. In 1853 there are travelogues of George Stoneman's trip across Panama to San Francisco and Lucy William's journey to Memphis by riverboat. There are letters to President James K. Polk (1795-1849) from people in England and Ireland claiming kinship and some from his wife (1852) and others about him. Political topics dur- ing this period include Irish liberty (1850), the Compromise of 1850, the election of 1852 nationally and in Tennessee, the Know-Nothing party, and the pro-Union activities of Polk and others in Tennessee (1860-1861). Civil War letters describe the fall of Cape Hatteras and Ft. Donelson; occupation of Nashville; Andrew Johnson as military governor; deaths of William H. Polk, Gen. Thomas J. Green (1863), and Gen. Earl Van Dorn (1863); and life on the home front, including raids, Federal occupation, and bitterness toward Union sympathizers. Postwar correspondence reflects Lucy Polk's efforts to regain af- fluence by settling her husband's estate (1866-1885), by claiming com- pensation for Federal damages, by seeking a Mexican War pension, and by claiming (1878-1882) the Cary estate in England through kin- ship to Col. James Cary, loyalist. Her attempts (1875-1883) to secure governement jobs for her sons reveal the combination of the civil ser- vice examination with patronage. Letters from North Carolina and Tennessee mention poverty, shortage of jobs, Reconstruction politics, corruption in Grant's administration (1876), the Hayes-Tilden dispute (1877), and the elections of 1884 and 1896. Many letters concern Washington (D.C.) society, gossip, growth, and progress (1866-1889). Some other subjects are Warrenton Female College (1869-1871); travels in Europe and America and visits to expositions (1876-1893); politcal and poetical works of Tasker Polk; historians Lyman C. Draper and John H. Wheeler (1875, 1882); Sen. Alexander H. Stephens (1871); General Assembly action on Josiah Turner, Jr., and on the Western North Carolian Railroad (1880); mica mining in Warren Co. (1880); tent meetings of evangelist Samuel Porter Jones in Alabama and Georgia (1885); a speech by Jefferson Davis (1886); Mexican War relics; a railroad disaster near Statesville (1891); death of Sarah Polk and overthrowing of James K. Polk's will (1891-1893); and genealogy of the Polk and Williams families. Also in the collection are accounts (1798-1889), some for Warrenton Female College (1869-1874); land papers (1730-1884) from Edgecombe, Tyrrell, Halifax, and Warren counties; Tyrrell and Warren county wills (1761, 1771, 1856); speeches (ca. 1840-1861) by Samuel W. Polk and William H. Polk on elections (1840, 1848, 1852), the Compromise of 1850, Know-Nothings and Whigs, Turkey, Cuba, censorship, Catholicism, and secession; Mexican War orders, requisitions, reports, pension certificates, court-martial proceedings, and a muster roll for Co. E, 3rd Regt. Dragoons (1848); notes on the finances of Mexico City; school reports from Bethel Academy (1876-1877); notes on Yale College astronomy lectures by Prof. [Denison] Olmsted (1834); slave birth records (1800-1863); horse breeding records; recipe books. Among other correspondents are Charles F. Deems, Daniel R. Goodloe, Wharton Jackson Green, Thomas Jefferson Green, Whitmell Hill, T. B. Kingsbury, James H. Otey, and L. L.
