Fisher, and Confederate artillery captain. Four volumes (1845-1855) contain correspondence, a few accounts, chart tracings, and miscellanea, many of which give details about the work at Beaufort and in the Cape Fear region (1850-1855). Letters referring to work done in Maine, South Carolina, and Georgia are from Supt. Alexander D. Bache, Bolles, other assistants, military men, and scientists such as astronomer Maria Mitchell. Most letters concern routine matters such as weather astronomical observations, charts and maps, vessels, work crews, supplies, instruments, and financial problems. Later material includes Bolles's Confederate commission, an account of his war service, a detailed report on completion of coast survey from Cape Fear to Little River Inlet, S.C. (1887), personal letters (1900), letters (1901-1906) about the building of Ft. Fisher, and printed material relating to defense of the fort. Papers of his second wife, Maria DuBrutz Reston Bolles, include reminiscences of her life in Wilmington during the Civil War as wife of banker William Reston, describing the yellow fever epidemic of 1862, manufacture of ink, Jefferson Davis's Arabian pony brought through the blockade, and flight with the bank gold during the bombardment of Ft. Fisher; and copies of material relating to Montgomery and Willcox forebears in the War of the Regulation. Correspondents include Henry W. Benham, Edmund Blunt, Julius E. Hilgard, Andrew A. Humphreys, John N. Maffitt, Edward O. C. Ord, Louis F. Pourtales, Alexander C. Rhind, and Isaac I.
