Smith, pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, to relatives in Charlottesville, Va., about secession; conditions and events in Greensboro during and after the war; her husband's congregation, including Negroes; Presbytery and Synod meetings and ministers attending; her relations with Negroes and views of slavery; reports from the front, including battle of Kernstown (1862); troops passing through town; southern sympathizers in the North (1861-1862); yellow fever in Wilmington; local marriages, deaths, and casualties; and the servant problem after the war.
