She tells Henry about his daughter, Cornelia Ann, who began complaining of rheumatism before Christmas and then got so sick that by New Years she had a hard time walking. By early January the swelling spread up her back to her hands so that she could hardly move but by 'Old Christmas Day' she had started to get better. Ann couldn't get a doctor for her daughter because there were no local doctors in the area but the neighbors have been stopping by to help her. She is sending him some Confederate money that shops will no longer take in town in hopes that he can use it where he is. She mentions the fighting at Wilmington. She has heard that postage stamps are being stolen off letters and wonders if that is why he hasn't gotten some of hers. She tells him news about various friends and family members. Nearby land has been rented out. The Union forces were attacked on the river and a great many were killed, so there aren't many Yankees in town at the moment.
