Letters concern such subjects as state and local history, genealogy, his books and articles, collection of war records during WWII, and the Folklore Society. Correspondents include A. R Newsome, S. A. Ashe, Christopher Crittenden, D. L. Corbitt, Frank C. Brown, J. Edgar Hoover, and Wade B. Matheny. There are many records of the N.C. Press Association kept by Griffin as its historian, including his annual histories of the North Carolina press (1940-1957); biographies (1952) of NCPA officials and many newspaper editors; programs of association conventions (1941-1956)'press institutes, and National Editorial Association conventions; publications such as the NEA Legislative Bulletins and the North Carolina Press (1941-1957); lists of North Carolina newspapers for advertisers (1942, 1947, 1951, 1952); typed articles about the press; and material from the U. S. Office of Censorship (1942-1945), including codes of practice and requests for silence on sightings of Japanese balloons and on atomic testing. Other correspondence, reports, minutes, appointments, awards, membership lists, and newsletters relate to the N. C. Historical Commission, the Dept. of Archives and History, Western N. C. Historical Association, Society of State and Local Historians, N. C. Literary and Historical Association, Rutherford Co. Democratic Executive Committee (1933-1937), Sons of the American Revolution, Red Cross, Rutherford County Club, Friends of Rutherford Hospital, and Rutherford Co. Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies (1940).   Typescripts of two of his books, History of Old Tryon and Rutherford and Western North Carolina Sketches, are in the collection with a subscription list and correspondence about the Cherokee Removal of 1838. There are also typescripts and clippings of many articles and speeches by Griffin and others on Rutherford Co. history, geography, industry, and improvements like rural electrification; state history; current events; and contemporary and historical Rutherford Co. residents, including clipped reminiscences of Rev. Christenberry Lee (1823-1876). Other material includes histories of Forest City, Spindale, and First Methodist Church of Forest City; programs and brochures relating to plays, centennials, churches, and a park; items from the Democratic state convention of 1934; information on B-29 airplanes of the Sixth War Loan Drive; report of an electrical cooperative (1946); list of Rutherford Co. teachers (1947-1948);maps of Forest City (1843), Iredell and Burke counties (1944,1953), and historical maps of Rutherford Co. and North Carolina (n. d.); and photographs of historic sites, graves, markers, organization officers, a War Bond drive (Forest City, 1944), and a family vacation to the beach and various eastern North Carolina towns (1939). There are also abstracts from county records; lists of Civil War soldiers in Rutherford Co. units; and cemetery inscriptions.     A few papers of Griffin's Rutherford Co. forebears include an apprentice bond (1805), tax lists (1819), school rules (1819), estate papers, and Civil War service and death certificates. Family letters (1826-1885) concern opportunities in Alabama (1837) and Arkansas (1855); a Confederate hospital in Virginia, desertions, morale, violence over food boxes, and a brother's death (1862-1865); and school, grange, elections, and childbirth in Madison Co.
