Correspondence concerns embargoes (1808, 1814), presidential elections (1808, 1824, 1828) and method of choosing a candidate, the U.S. Bank, government spending, internal improvements, and the tariff. An 1821 letter from Thomas Jefferson comments on states' rights and the national debt. Macon's correspondence with Martin Van Buren (1823, 1830-1837), mostly typescripts from Van Buren's papers, expresses cautious approval of Jackson and complains of unfairness to the South. Over thirty letters to Weldon N. Edwards (1826-1830) discuss Henry Clay, William H. Crawford, John Haywood, and John Randolph, as well as political issues. Also typed copies of correspondence between John Quincy Adams and William Crawford (1825), and a letter from the citizens of Putnam Co., Ga., about forms of resistance to the tariff (1828). There are a few family letters; and one to Archibald Murphey about the War of Regulation, method of choosing the first county Committee of Safety in Bute, and Macon's burning of his papers some years before. Also a printed copy of the U.S. Constitution and rules of the Senate (Washington, 1820); The Racing Calendar Abridged, Vol. I, 1709-1750 (London, 1829); petition by free Negro woman for the emancipation of her husband (1806); and two Warren Co. marriage licenses. Correspondents also include John Branch, Joseph Seawell Jones, and William Jones."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"3 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["Nathaniel Macon Papers.
