State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"Letter books and a few other papers of the Quinlan-Monroe Lumber Company (1901-1911) and the affiliated Tuckaseigee Lumber Company (1906-1914) operating in Waynesville, Hazelwood, and other points in Haywood, Jackson, and Swain counties. Letters from Quinlan-Monroe were written by Edwin E. Quinlan (d. 1909), originally of Towanda, Pa., by son Charles E. Quinlan, and by W. E. Monroe (d. 1907), and those from the Tuckaseigee company were from E. E. and Charles Quinlan and from Edward S. Allis, manager. Letters to lumber companies in southern states concern purchase of timber; letters to agents and to manufacturers in North Carolina, the Northeast, and the Middle West quote freight rates, prices, and availability of hardwoods. There are also instructions to employees and contractors; correspondence with freight agents and dispatchers; and letters to Tuckaseigee stockholders about election of officers, assets and liabilities, lawsuits, mining prospects, and efforts to sell cutover land to U.S. Forest Service or to cattlemen for grazing. Many letters concern E. E. Quinlan's estate, especially Tuckaseigee accounts and Tennessee lands of Quinlan, Huddleston, and Leach. Other subjects include equipment, supplies, insurance, railroads, jobs, and Quinlan business interests in Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and with Unagusta Manufacturing Company, Waynesville. Financial statements, accounts, contracts, and reports are also in the letter books, and the earliest volume contains correspondence of lumber dealers McNabb and Bennett, Waynesville (1900).   Other items include a Quinlan-Monroe invoice book (1907-1910); business letters from Edward S. Allis and from T. M. Mason of Murphy, N.C.; financial ratings on customers in Newark, New York City, and Baltimore; insurance policy on house of Hon. J. C. L. Gudger of Waynesville; letters to E. E. Quinlan from relatives in New York State and Wisconsin; and letter from Lawrenceville School, Pa. (1911).
