D. Cooke to edit the Southern Weekly Post (Raleigh), his interest in Whig politics (1846-1854), and his speculation in coal and gold mines (1851-1866). Most of the collection, however, deals with his organizing and building up the common school system of the state (1851-1866). There are printed and drafted circulars to county superintendents and letters from superintendents and others on such subjects as textbooks; the examination, qualifications, appointments, duties, and salaries of teachers; school laws; the Literary Fund; distribution of funds; and the establishment of the North Carolina Journal of Education, the North Carolina Education Association, and teachers' library associations. There are assorted common school reports, accounts, bonds (1853-1867), and answers from 62 county school systems to a questionnaire (1854). There are also letters from educators in many states, including Charles Phillips on the free schools in Cambridge, Mass., and occasional correspondence concerning North Carolina colleges, the university, and the Presbyterian church. During the Civil War, problems included the quality of local administration, textbooks, graded schools, the school fund, and depreciation of Confederate money and bonds, while personal letters concerned the war and Wiley's religious writings. Two letters (1865) from Governor Vance discuss the abolition of slavery and evacuation from Raleigh. After the war there are letters from Jonathan Worth and W. W. Holden about Wiley's position as superintendent from northern churchmen on Negro education; and from others on Negro suffrage, Reconstruction politics, repudiation of Confederate debts, emigration to the West, conditions in Person Co., and the loss of school records in the war. Later letters reflect his continued interest in and labors for educational advancement, with references to the Literary Board's swamplands, the Peabody Fund, and his candidacy for superintendent of public instruction (1872). There are also family land records (1757-1839, mostly Guilford Co.) and accounts.     Miscellaneous material includes a few of Wiley's sermons as a Presbyterian minister; speeches, one on the education of women; an 1865 letter from Wiley on Negro education, published in the Observer (Raleigh) in 1878; textbook advertisements and price lists; Wiley's novel Old Dan Tucker and His Son Walter (London, n.d. [1851]), which was published in the U.S. (1849) as Roanoke, or Where is Utopia?; and a chapter on Wiley's early life by D. C. Rankin. Other correspondents include George E. Badger, Kemp P. Battle, W. J. Bingham, William H. Coleman, Braxton Craven, John W. Cunningham, Moses A. Curtis, Lyman C. Draper, John W. Ellis, John A. Gilmer, William A. Graham, Edward J. Hale, W. C. Kerr, Duncan K. McRae, Matt W. Ransom, Kenneth Rayner, R. M. Saunders, David L. Swain, Josiah Turner, Jr., John Hill Wheeler, and Patrick H.
