He assures her that he hasn't seen a woman or child since he left home and doesn't want to until he can see her. He mentions that he did not volunteer, but was forced into service, writing that ''if they [the Yankees] come to bother you you must tel them that I could not help it for I did not volun teer I was forced in to it and I blame them for it to not keep the rebel back and you must console your self as much as possible the lord is able and put your trust in him and tel them rip for I have hope they wont be permited to destroy what you have got...'
