Owners of the land include Richard Dobbs Spaight, Sr., whose guardian was Frederick Gregg; Spaight's father-in-law Joseph Leech; his sons Richard Dobbs Spaight, Jr., and Charles G. Spaight; his son-in-law Judge John R. Donnell; and his grandson Richard S. Donnell. Related papers include list of land papers (1771) from the estate of Richard Spaight (d. 1765); abstracts of grants and deeds of William Wilson (1735-1743); list of property of Joseph Leech (1798); deeds for interest in steam sawmill and several vessels (1818, 1821); and release of Richard S. Donnell from debt to Bank of the State of North Carolina (Mar., 1865). Also in collection are grants and deeds for land in Craven, Carteret, New Hanover, Dobbs, Duplin, and Moore counties belonging to Vine Allen, David Allison, Silvester Brown, Jesse G. Bryan, Patrick Connor, Allen Robinson, John C. Stanly, William Wilson, and others; deed of trust for estate of Rev. John Morton, Durham, England (1722); and militia commission for Thomas Robinson (1797). Photocopies are of warrants from Gov. William Tryon authorizing payment for governor's residence (1769) and authorizing induction of Rev. James Reed as rector of Christ Church, New Bern (1765); and of Tryon's report to Sir Henry Clinton on amphibious raid along Connecticut coast (1779). Printed material includes the Country Journal or the Craftsman (London), Nov. 15, Dec. 13, 1729; the Pennsylvania Mercury and Universal Advertiser (Philadelphia), Oct. 27, 1775, with news of munitions found in Tryon Palace gardens; North Carolina laws passed in 1794 concerning the militia and cession of Ft.
