She hasn't been bothered by the Yankees yet although she can hear gunfire. The local thought is that the Union troops are trying to get to Weldon. She is worried that the Union will take the railroads and will stop the mail, keeping her from hearing from her husband. She wonders why he can't get a furlough when others can. Rodah went to town to try to bury her baby and saw a large amount of Union troops there. Ann reports on Union cavalry in the area. There are groceries available in the area. Ann tells Henry the best way to come home if he gets a furlough and says that Rodah says that Confederate soldiers who come home can't be treated as deserters.
