E, Thomas's Legion, 1862-1865, including slave bills of sale (1853, 1857) and a letter about bridge-building (1860). Civil War letters concern hunting deserters and conscripts and safeguarding cattle and bridges in East Tennessee; fighting in Shenandoah Valley; the need for defense against bushwhackers, deserters, and Federal troops; and a saltworks in Virginia. Official papers include authorization to raise company of volunteers (1862); descriptive, muster, and bounty rolls; passes and hospital releases; recommendations for promotion and demotion; correspondence about Whitaker's trial and acquittal for absence without leave; and list of company members paroled (May, 1865). From Lt. Col. W. C. Walker, Col. W. H. Thomas, Gen Alfred E. Jackson, and Gen. Joseph E. Johnston there are orders to violate his Federal parole (1863), to round up deserters and absentees, and to work with the Home Guard. Also there is an undated petition to Confederate goverment for conscripts and reserves to remain in the county to raise crops and protect homes. Letters from Whitaker's sons report annual arrival of a blockade-runner at Beaufort and describe battle at New Hope, Va. (1864).
