He also gives local news and com- ments on Whig politics. To his sons he wrote of his experiences with many diseases, such as yellow fever, smallpox, epilepsy, and cholera (during an 1834 epidemic in Washington, N.C.). In a letter book (1805- 1812, n.d.) is a description of his own recovery from consumption by fresh air and exercise. An 1832 letter describes Bishop Levi S. Ives, and in 1841 he wrote from Washington, D.C., describing George E. Badger, William C. Preston, Thomas Hart Benton, and Henry A. Wise. Letters to Mary Harvey in 1848 discuss novels and the status of women. There are letters to Norcom from Frederic Beasley (1819) and from such noted doctors as Benjamin Rush (1809) and John R. Coxe, David Hosack, Jacob Bigelow, and Nathaniel Potter (1818-1822). Several letters relate to the Protestant Episcopal church in North Carolina, and one describes an 1833 journey from Edenton to Hartford, Conn. Letters from Norcom's children are from Raleigh and eastern North Carolina, Philadelphia, Cincinnati (1849), Chile and San Francisco in the 1849 gold rush, Petersburg where William was doctor in the North Carolina hospital (1863-1864), and Paris [1866]. Medical papers by James and William A. B. Norcom are on re- mitting pleurisy (1805), smallpox vaccination, epilepsy, and acute gastritis. James Norcom was a trustee of Edenton Academy, and there are appeals for funds (n.d.), an announcement about term and teachers (n.d.), drafts of addresses to the students, and comments on corporal punishment. Also an undated message \"To the Whigs of Beaufort,\" an address to the Clay Club, and genealogical information on the Norcom, Horniblow, Bunch, Meard, Hoskins, Waddell, and Blount families."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"2 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["Dr. James Norcom Papers.
