State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"Fenner Bryan Satterthwaite (1813-1875) was born near Leechville, Beaufort County; married Annie E. Laughinghouse (ca. 1835); was elected to House of Representatives from Beaufort Co., 1836; settled on a farm in Pitt County, 1839; studied law with John S. Hawks, 1842; admitted to the NC Bar , in 1843. This small collection includes deeds, newspapers, obituaries, a broadside, book, and a pamphlet.    [Note: Manly Wade Wellman in Dead and Gone, p. 55 says that Satterthwaite studied law while in debtor's prison and later rose to immense legal and political success.] Satterthwaite also elected to House of Representatives from Pitt Co., 1848; and elected to Vance's council of state by the legislature in 1862. He was one of the defense lawyers at the murder trial of the Rev. George W. Carawan of Hyde County, 1853. His children were Fenner B. Satterthwaite, Martha Alice (Mrs. Joseph B. Stickney), and Thomas H. Satterthwaite, whose son F. Bryan Satterthwaite was in the buggy with General Bryan Grimes the night Grimes was murdered.
