Patterson (1867-1926), Halifax County, consist of letters, telegrams, bills and receipts, business reports, printed matter including speeches, drawings, and a photograph. They reflect to a degree his life and business career. A son of Rufus Lenoir Patterson and his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Fries, Samuel F. Patterson was born at Salem, N.C., and educated in the Salem Boys' School and in the Bingham School at Mebane. He was then given technical training in textile manufacture and management in the Arista Cotton Mills at Salem, owned by his uncles, Francis and Henry Fries. At age 19 he became superintendent of the Odell Manufacturing Company (makers of plaids) at Concord, N.C., and remained with that firm for four years. In 1892 he joined his uncle, Francis Fries, and a partner, William H. Kerr, in purchasing controlling stock in the Thistle Mills, Ilchester, Maryland, and served as manager of the company from 1892 to 1907. In 1910 Patterson moved to Roanoke Rapids and began to play a greater role in the daily operations of the Roanoke Mills Company in which he held the position of manager and treasurer from 1896 until his death. He was, in 1900, one of the organizers of Rosemary Manufacturing Company; adjacent to Roanoke Rapids, and in 1919 he bought out the interests of his brother, John L. Patterson, and the shares belonging to the estate of Clarence Millhiser, thus gaining control of the company which he managed until his death. Patterson was, in 1909, one of the organizers and the builder of Patterson Mills at Rosemary, N.C., but resigned from the board of directors in January, 1916, and disposed of his shares of stock shortly thereafter. Active as trustee and officer in the Cotton Manufacturers Association of North Carolina, the Southern Cotton Manufacturers Association, and the American Cotton Manufacturers Association, Patterson died suddenly of a heart attack the week following his election as president of the last named association. The miscellaneous papers in this collection include a brief unpublished manuscript biography of Patterson written by A. Edwin Akers, Though Patterson's papers are incomplete, enough of them survive to shed considerable light on his philosophy, his character, and his operating method in relationship both to mills and to the mill village. In all, his papers are gathered into the following main categories. 1. The first is Correspondence, 1907-1926. 5 fibredex boxes. This is a mixture of personal and business letters (both incoming and outgoing), all of which are arranged in a single chronological order. There are but few purely personal letters among them, including family letters. Additional personal correspondence in the collection includes approximately 50 letters ranging in date from Feb. 22, 1919, to Aug. 5, 1920, relating to 0. Max Gardner's unsuccessful campaign for nomination as the Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate in the election of 1920, and Patterson's effort to elicit strong support for the candidacy from cotton manufacturers in the state. There are, too, brief runs of letters during April-June 1923 and September-November 1925 relating to new buildings (library, gymnasium, dormitory, power plant, etc.) to be erected at N.C. State College of Agriculture and Engineering (now North Carolina State University), including a few letters from the architect Hobart Brown Upjohn (1876-1949), and a series of three anonymous postcards (June 4and 8, and Aug 1923, from a disappointed local architect and alumnus of N.C. State. By far the greater part of the general correspondence relates not to personal matters but to various aspects of the operations of the two manufacturing companies managed by Patterson. 2.Residence, 1920-1924. 3 fibredex boxes. Late in 1919 Patterson began to project the building of a new residence for himself in Roanoke Rapids. The house was liberally conceived, complete with loggia, reception room, palm room, billiard room, refrigerator room, and swimming pool in addition to the usual living room, bedrooms, breakfast and dining rooms, pantries, dressing rooms, and so forth that one would expect to find. The house was to be furnished with oriental rugs, specially made fine furniture, and silk hangings, while the walls and ceilings were to be finished with ornamental plasterwork. Patterson had the New York architectural firm of Hobart B. Upjohn prepare plans and elevations early in 1920, and engaged the services of Henri G. Courtais of New York and John Wannamaker of Philadelphia for decorations and furnishings. Papers relating to the construction and furnishing of the house and its grounds have been categorically arranged. They include correspondence, bills, and accounts. There are no plans or drawings among them. The three fibredex boxes of materials relating to construction of the house include accounts for lumber and bricks, some of which might relate to mill construction rather than to house construction. 3. Town of Roanoke Rapids, 1910-1925. 1 fibredex box. Though the files relating to the town of Roanoke Rapids andthe village of Rosemary are so incomplete as to be unable to show the depth of Patterson's influence and contributions toward improving the quality of community life for mill employees, still enough survives to give some indication of the breadth of it. The general file entitled, \"Community Life\", includes one or more items relating to night school, community Christmas tree, mill concert band, excursions for mill employees, and so forth. Separate files relate to Patterson's purchase of pipe organs for three of the local churches and his support for the building programs of others."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"10 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["Samuel Finley Patterson Papers.
