Supereme Court justice (1844-1858) and chief justice (1852-1858). Correspondence, much undated, concerns family affairs, a defendant at Wilkes Co. Superior Court (1822), and the lack of organized religion in Hillsborough and Salisury, with several letters from Nash's half brother John Witherspoon, Presbyterian minister and missionary to Hillsborough. A letter from Nash at Hills- borough concerns the supreme court session and Thomas Ruffin's defeat of Governor Swain for presidency of the railroad convention (1833); and there is some Civil War correspondence between 2nd Sgt. Henry P. Nash and his brother Frederick at Chapel Hill. There are single letters from John Haywood, William H. Haywood, Jr., and Edmund Strudwick. Typed copies of letters from John Whiting and Mrs. Mary Moore to Ezra Stiles (1759-1768) include three from New Bern describing lack of religious services, Chief Justice Martin Howard, Governor Tryon and his palace, and New Bern Academy. Also included are photocopy of the last letter of Gen. Francis Nash to his wife (1777) and letters (1788-1794) to Mary Nash Witherspoon, widow of General Nash's brother Abner, concerning her business affairs. Es- tate papers of Benjamin Pearce, Harding Jones, and Abner Nash in- clude some land and slave papers. Miscellaneous items include statement regarding suspension of university students for bell ringing (1809); Christian Almanack (1825); list of Nash marriages and births, 1842-1858; political broadside against Buchanan (1856); subscription list for the Tract Society ; an undated memorandum from William A. Graham to Chief Justice Nash on the case of Manly v. City of Raleigh; circular for school of Misses Nash and Miss Kollock, Hillsborough (1863); and a description of the Riley family of Orange Co.
