Martha is distressed because she and the children are still sick, and Bill Cowen is trying to get them to leave their home by preventing them from farming the land. She says the only men left are speculators who are trying to rob the women and children while the men are away at war. She writes about the cost of a recent visit to the doctor and another financial debt for which she feels she is being charged too much. There have been several deaths in the area, including Francis's aunt. Martha has sent Francis a large package of food, including pies. She tells him to write to her instead of to \"...them that dont thank you for it...\" She is angry about the treatment she is getting from their community and his family.
