Seven of the letters are from the Civil War period (1858-1880), one of which contains military documents. Two other letters from this period relate to an attempt to locate the body of Thomas Livingstone Whitefield, who died of chronic diarrhoea in the Army hospital at Petersburg, Va., on February 6, 1863.
