Johnson grew up in a segregated Greensboro and became involved in the Civil Rights Movement in her freshman year of college. After the Civil Rights Movement, Johnson went on to lead One Step Further, which helps young people through difficult times, in 1982 and served as executive director until 2024. She became Greensboro's first African American mayor in 2007. This interview was conducted by B. Bernetiae Reed on April 19, 2024, for the South Benbow Road National Register of Historic Places Nomination and in collaboration with the City of Greensboro Historic Planning Office. South Benbow Road is a historically Black neighborhood in Greensboro, North Carolina and this project helps preserve the neighborhood and city’s history through the voices of its residents. The Oral History collection contains interviews conducted and acquired by the Oral History Unit of the State Archives of North Carolina. This unit seeks to work with individuals and communities across the state to record and preserve the lived experience of North Carolinians, as told by North Carolinians and to make these histories accessible for generations to come."},{"label":"Date","value":"D:19 M:04 Y:2024"},{"label":"Rights","value":"All rights for this interview held by State Archives of North Carolina.
