Arthur Bluethenthal was the son of Leupold and Johanna Bleuthenthal of Wilmington, N.C. He was born on November 1, 1891 and enlisted in 1916. He served for one year in the American Ambulance Field Service, Section 3, before enlisting on May 20, 1917 in the French Air Service as a pilot. He was killed in action on June 5, 1918. In the beginning of the letter, Arthur states that the soldiers were told that they were only to be in Paris for three day, but that they remained in the city for over three weeks. By the end of the time in the city, he had spent most of his money and had to begin drafting money from his father's bank account. They eventually traveled by train to Marseilles. He describes one trip to a Marseilles cafe along with eleven American soldiers and two British officers where a disagreement occurred regarding the bill for the wine they ordered. The argument with the cafe owner resulted in the police being called and the whole group being taken to the \"Night Court\" to explain themselves. He describes the journey by munitions ship to \"Solonique,\" including life aboard ship, deaths of passengers by disease and burial at sea, life preserver drills, language difficulties between the soldiers and the crew, and being on lookout for enemy ships. Arthur describes the bombing of Solonique, the deaths of civilians, and the difficulties of traveling in the mud to Albania. The letter includes a postscript that announces that he has been awarded the Croix de guerre."},{"label":"Physical Characteristics","value":"Typed mimeographed copy of a letter, 4 pages"},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers.;"},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["World War I Papers.
