West Sr. was born in November 9, 1944, in Johnston County, North Carolina. He attended high school at Pittsboro High School in Chatham County, N.C. West was living in Apex, N.C., when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He would attend basic training at the U.S. Naval Station Great Lakes in Lake County, Illinois. After basic training, West was stationed at a New Jersey shipyard for six months.  West next reported to the U.S. Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, and was assigned for duty aboard the USS Lawrence (DDG-4). During West's service, the Lawrence participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, and cruised the Mediterranean during 1963. After his two-year tour of active duty, West remained in the U.S. Naval Reserves until 1968. West reached the rank of E-2, Fireman Apprentice, and Machinist's Mate during his military service.
