(now Eden, N.C.), to James Thomas and Delitha Skinnell Barker. Cody Barker was raised on farms in Rockingham County, N.C., and Henry County, Virginia, as one of nine siblings. He graduated from Morehead High School in Eden, N.C., in 1960. When he was 18 years old, the Barker family moved to Danville, Virginia, where Cody worked for Dan River Mills, a local textile manufacturer. Barker signed up for the U.S. Marine Corps in May 1963, although his induction was delayed so could assist in that year's tobacco harvest. He was inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps in September 1963 in Richmond, Virginia. Barker attended boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. On November 22, 1963, he was sent for Advanced Infantry Training at Camp Geiger, part of the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune complex in Jacksonville, N.C. In February 1964, he was assigned to the U.S. Naval Air Station (NAS) Memphis in Millington, Tennessee, for aircraft mechanic training. In late 1964, Barker was assigned to additional training with Attack Squadron 42 (VA-42), a U.S. Navy attack squadron based at the U.S. Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. After four months of training, Barker and other Marines formed a squadron, and moved to the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C. While stationed at MCAS Cherry Point, Barker married Linda Grey Welch on September 25, 1965, in Cascade, Virginia. Barker deployed for a tour of duty during the Vietnam War in the spring of 1966. He served as an aircraft mechanic in Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152 (VMGR-152), 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, based out of Marine Corps Air Station Futenma on the island of Okinawa. On October 28, 1966, Barker was sent for temporary additional duty at Da Nang Air Base in Da Nang, South Vietnam. While in Vietnam, his temporary duty was extended, and he assisted in construction of the base's enlisted men's club--in addition to his duties as an aircraft mechanic. Barker returned to Okinawa in February 1967, where he remained until he completed his tour of duty in June 1967. He then served at MCAS Cherry Point until he was discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps in September 1967. Barker reached the rank of E-5, Sergeant during his military career. After his military service, Barker continued to work at Dan River Mills, until he was hired by U.S. Gypsum Corporation in December 1967. He would work at U.S. Gypsum Corporation until the Danville, Virginia, plant closed in 2004. At the time of the interview, Barker was living in Danville, Virginia."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"3 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Summaries"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"All rights held by the State Archives of NC.
