Hayes describes growing up in Pleasant Grove and facing discrimination under Jim Crow segregation. He also discusses the Occaneechi Tribe and the importance of community within the tribe and among other American Indians across North Carolina. He talks about the importance of equality and access to education for American Indians in the United States. This interview was conducted by John Horan on September 18, 2023 in collaboration with the North Carolina American Indian Heritage Commission. The Oral History collection contains interviews conducted and acquired by the Oral History Unit of the State Archives of North Carolina. This unit seeks to work with individuals and communities across the state to record and preserve the lived experience of North Carolinians, as told by North Carolinians and to make these histories accessible for generations to come.
