Airy, and state senator (1911, 1919). Personal items include a few family letters; class notes, university magazines, and diplomas (University of Virginia, 1869-1872); letters and papers concerning law practice, farming, phosphate mining in North Carolina and Florida, and land for colonization, with business letters (1883-1905) from Walter Clark, William W. Vass, and others; and school reports and information (1891-1904) from St. Mary's School, Presbyterian High School at Mebane, Horner School at Oxford, and North Carolina Military School at Red Springs. Material (1883-1896) from the district Internal Revenue Office concerns regulation of distilleries, tobacco and cigar manufacturers, and peddlers, with lists of those bonded (1889). Letters and papers (1894-1900) of the Alpine Woolen Mill include superintendents' reports on production, prices, orders, and equipment; mill advertisements; samples; accounts and receipts; trade magazines; and reports on number of sheep in vicinity. Warren Co. commissioner papers include financial statements; lists of retail licenses, traders, and magistrates; powers and duties of election supervisors and list of felons convicted and disfranchised (1877-1892); Warrenton town ordinances (1899); county dispensary statements; teachers' report and pay application (colored school, 1896); and letters about the county home, board of health, and jail, including prisoners' complaints, and about need for birth control information (1893) and a fireproof room for county records. Also letter to the governor from a Duplin Co. man about raid on his home by the federal revenue officer (1888).   Letters concerning local, state, and national elections (especially 1892-1894), county conventions, and patronage are from many Democrats such as Charles M. Busbee, Furnifold M. Simmons, Julian S. Carr, Walter Clark, John A. Collins, H. H. Falkener, R. B. Glenn, Claude Kitchin, T. P. Jerman, James H. Pou, and F. A. Woodard. Other political material (1884-1904) includes Democratic, Republican, and Populist campaign material on candidates and issues such as free silver, tariff, the \"Force Bill,\" and the North Carolina suffrage amendment of 1900; a canvass book for several Warren Co. townships (1890); minutes of the county Democratic convention (1896); and printed material relating to the state and national party in the 1890s. Items relating to Weldon N. Edwards (1788-1873) include correspondence (1821-1832, 1871), notes on slavery, accounts and receipts (1810-1842), and estate papers.   Miscellaneous items include correspondence about electric lights for the Raleigh post office (1885); horse-breeding records; a book on THE HORSE (American edition, 1846); assorted advertisements; publications by state agencies, including first report of Bureau of Labor Statistics (1887); printed information on developers in Wilmington (1884), Winston (1890) and Oxford (1892) and on the Warrenton Railroad (1903); and pamphlets on farming, internal improvements, and North Carolina history."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"7 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["Marmaduke James Hawkins Papers.
