The Molloy family emigrated from Scotland to Long Island, New York, in 1949. Martin Molloy graduated from high school in Kings Point, New York, in 1963. Upon graduation, he worked at a local hospital until he was inducted into the U.S. Army on February 1, 1966, during the Vietnam War.  Molloy attended basic training at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia; and went through Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. He was then assigned to Fort Riley near Junction City, Kansas, to help reactivate the 9th Infantry Division. He was deployed to Vietnam in December 1966, leaving from Oakland, California. He initially arrived in V?ng Tàu, Vietnam, before being assigned on December 23, 1966, to the U.S. Army's Bearcat Base, near the city of Biên Hòa in South Vietnam.  At Bearcat Base, Molloy was assigned to C Company, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, U.S. Army. After a few weeks the base, his unit set up a permanent base camp in the Mekong Delta. During this tour of duty, Molloy was transferred to the 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry (Riverine), 9th Infantry Division. Molloy left Vietnam on November 23, 1967, and was discharged from the U.S. Army the same month. He reached the rank of E-5 (Sergeant) during his military service. After his service in the U.S. Army, Molloy went to work for the W.T. Grant Company. He would live in St. Louis, Missouri; Pennsylvania; and Connecticut. He moved to Raleigh, N.C., in the 1990s.
