Suggestions for Hill's HISTORY OF NORTH CAROLINA IN THE CIVIL WAR are from Kemp P. Battle, Samuel A. Ashe, James Sprunt, D. H. Hill, Sr., Fred A. Olds, and others commenting on battles of Antietam, Malvern Hill, Gettysburg, Yorktown and Williamsburg, Chickamauga, and Atlee's Station; Stoneman's Raid; Stonewall Jackson; D. H. Hill as teacher at Davidson College and as general; possible basis for \"Barbara Freitchie\" poem; recollected rosters; Warren Horse Guards (1859-1860); Cherokees during the war; the ram ALBEMARLE; blockade-running, Bureau of Foreign Supplies, Liverpool merchants, agent Duncan K. McRae, and rosin warrants; Judge Pearson's decision on conscripts; trip to prison on Morris Island; gloom in Richmond, peace moves, and Jefferson Davis; gold and silver given to soldiers accompanying Davis to Georgia; Fries Woolen Mill and other industries during the war; and the last shot fired in Raleigh. Also related to the Civil War are sketch maps and comments on confederate forts in Craven Co.; some printed maps; list of \"Spartan mothers\" who worked in Goldsboro hospitals; draft of part of Hill's Bethel to Sharpsburg; and material concerning monuments at Vicksburg, Stone Mountain, Fort Fisher, and Bennett Place. Much correspondence is with the publishers of Hill's school text- books on agriculture and history, with a draft of YOUNG PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF NORTH CAROLINA and a national list of agriculture teacher- trainers, state supervisors, and directors of vocational education (1923). Some letters and papers concern Hill's presidency of NC A and M (1908-1916) and his former students; resignation of President Mary 0. Graham (1918) of Peace Institute and expenditures there (1923); Davidson College fund raising; survey of colleges in Raleigh (1923); and the teaching of Bible in state colleges (1923). There is also a bulletin (1921) of the National Training School in Durham, a vocational college for Negroes. Other items concern First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh, North Carolina [Presbyterian] Synod's Committee on Schools and Colleges; the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce; Rotary Club; Near East Relief Fund (1920); the Watauga Club of Raleigh, with constitution of 1884; investments in banks, textiles, Pepsi-Cola Company, and Texas oil; and the North Carolina Historical Commission, its movie about the \"Lost Colony\" (1921), Frank C. Brown's collection of folklore by \"Ediphone\" (1920), and qualifications of R. D. W. Connor for university president. The few political items include request by O. Max Gardner for campaign ideas (1916) and an editorial on need for leadership in the woman's movement (1922). WWI material includes Hill's appointment to North Carolina Council of Defense; council circulars; anti-German poetry; and letters about conditions in France, German collaborators in Wilmington and the loyal work of Negro George King, antiwar sentiments, and honors for Negro soldiers. Also Hill's expenses and church accounts (1891-1895), letters about tax audits and automobile repair (1918), answers to a questionnaire about farming (1921), speeches on education and progress in North Carolina, and research notes. Misclaneous printed material (1895-1967) includes a recollection of the Battle of Roanoke Island; articles by A. J. Morrison on the religious newspaper NORTH CAROLINA TELEGRAPH (founded 1825) and on colonial surveyor J. G. W.
