Museum of Art (1955-1958), including his study collection of photographs, prints, and drawings primarily of Italian sculpture and Flemish-Dutch painting through the 17th century, but also of early Italian, French, Spanish, and German art and modern art. Many study folders and some notebooks contain photographs for works of Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals, Leonardo da Vinci, Andrea Verrocchio, Peter Paul Rubens; also of Van Dyck, de Hooch, Cellini, David, the Pisani, Maes, Van Eyck, Lippi, Fabritius, de Camaino, Titian, Poussin, Donatello, and many others. Published articles by Valentiner; typescripts and manuscripts (published and unpublished); and newspaper clippings date from 1903 and span his career as student and museum assistant (University of Heidelberg and Berlin Museum); curator, Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y., 1908-1914; director of Detroit Institute of Arts, 1921-1945; Los Angeles County Museum, 1946-1953; and J. Paul Getty Museum, Santa Monica, 1954-1955. Papers associated with N.C. Museum of Art include correspondence with museum directors, curators, and staff in this country and abroad; art dealers; and private collectors, many seeking Valentiner's comments, opinions, and authentication of paintings (1955-1958). Correspondents include George Antheil, James B. Byrnes, Kurt Bauch, Winston Broadfoot, Giulia Brunetti, Hilde Fiedler, Ebria Feinblatt, J. Paul Getty, Edwin Gill, Lucius P. Green, Luther H. Hodges, Robert Lee Humber, Peggy Jo Kirby, Sherman Lee, Herbert H. Lehman, W. Lunsford Long, Peggy T. Rathbone, Hannes Schaeffer, Leila E. Smith, Mitchell Samuels, Germain Seligman, Robert Tannahill, Henry Trubner, Malcolm Vaughan, Frederick Winkler, Ben Williams. Also included are manuscripts and photographs for The Bamburg Rider and Rembrandt and Spinoza, books published by Valentiner in 1956 and 1957; and working papers for preparation of catalogs and exhibits, \"Rembrandt and His Pupils\" (1956) and \"Masterpieces of Art,\" the memorial exhibition for Valentiner in 1959. Catalog of the latter has a bibliography of Valentiner's published work. Personal items include several typescript chapters of his autobiography prior to 1908; gift poems and stories by his daughter Brigitta (Mrs. Harry) Bertoia; typescript of \"Artists I Remember\" (Max Beckmann, Diego Rivera, Oscar Kokoschka, John B. Flannagan, E. Ludwig Kirchner), 1951; a scrapbook of photographs of a portion of his personal art collection; and diploma for honorary LL.D., Duke University, 1957.
