State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"The Veterans' Memorial Commission was created in 1987 for the purpose of erecting on the State Capitol grounds a monument to the veterans of World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.  Funding for the commission and monument was to be appropriated from a reserve fund created in 1983 and the commission was established within the Department of Cultural Resources.  None of the fifteen members could be members of the General Assembly; five members were appointed by the governor, and the remaining members were appointed by the General Assembly (half were recommended by the speaker of the House and half were recommended by the president of the Senate).  The commission members served for the life of the commission.  The monument was erected in July 1990 and the commission terminated after the official dedication ceremony on May 27, 1990.
