Letters, copies of letters, orders, and other items concern the return of Ft. Caswell to the United States in January, 1861, its recapture along with Ft. Johnston in April, Cantwell's command there until July, and British vessels off the coast. Later letters concern \"Wilmington Rail Road Guards\" raised by Cantwell in 1863, his service with other regiments, goods sent him as a prisoner of war, the indentification of an 1857 flag belonging to his brother, and muster rolls lent the War Records Office for copying. Also typed biography of Cantwell and a memorandum book listing 600 captured Confederate officers, including Cantwell, sent from Ft. Delaware to Morris Island in 1864.
