It may be that the letter was begun on Dec. 8, 1864, and finished in 1865. Henry tells Ann that he has transferred ships, but they may have to evacuate the city if Sherman continues his march from Savannah. Four marines deserted on Old Christmas (Jan. 6). He details his clothing, meals and living conditions on the ship. He believes the war will end soon.
