White was raised in Wendell, N.C., and graduated from high school in 1967. He then attended Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson, N.C., until he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1969. White served on active duty for two years during the early 1970s. He was assigned to the USS Cascade (AD-16), a destroyer tender, where he served his first six months of active duty in Newport, Rhode Island, before serving the remainder of his time in Naples, Italy. He was released from the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1975. White reached the rank of Storekeeper-Petty Officer, Second Class, during his military service. After his service in the U.S. Naval Reserves, White had a career in the automobile industry. He was also active in his local chapter of the American Legion.
