Each time Miss Kagawa visits her homeland she returns to the museum with many gifts including her \"sister\" dolls and these lovely hand-wrapped Japanese thread balls. Dr. Sidney Gulick, a former American missionary to Japan, was concerned about the rising tension between the U.S. and Japan. In 1926, he devised a plan of sending gifts of American dolls from the school children of America to the children of Japan. He knew the importance of dolls in the Japanese culture and hoped that sending dolls would promote friendship and understanding between the two countries. He sent more than 12,000 dolls to Japan in 1926. In return, as a thank you, Japan sent 58 handcrafted dolls. Miss Kagawa was one of those 58 dolls. The Friendship dolls arrived in 1927 and toured the United States. Eventually each one was assigned to a home, each state receiving at least one doll. This museum, the only state museum in North Carolina at the time, received Miss Kagawa in October of 1928. The Friendship dolls were 32 inched tall, dressed in silk kimonos and have accessories such as tea sets, parasols, and laquer chests. Miss Kagawa and many of her accessories are on exhibit in the Nature's Explorers hall. Many of the American dolls sent to Japan were destroyed during WWII but 44 of the 58 Japanese dolls have been found.
