More important items include a note from Gen. Horatio  Gates at Hillsborough about lack of cavalry at Battle of Camden  (Aug., 1780); and letters from James Moore at Wilmington to the  provincial congress on the situation of American troops (Mar.,  1776), from Thomas Burke to the General Assembly on powers of  Congress (1777), from Willie Jones to Gov. Abner Nash with news  of Congress and the war (1780), from Richard Dobbs Spaight to Jacob  Read with personal and political news (1784), from Bedford Brown to  Thomas L. Smith about persuading Daniel Webster to accept post as  U.S. secretary of state (1850), and from Robert A. Toombs, Confederate  secretary of state, introducing Samuel Monson as agent for purchasing  military goods (1861). Also accounts of John Penn with the state  (1775-1780), militia commission of Col. John Simpson of Pitt Co.
