Robert West was raised in Jones County, N.C., and graduated from Grainger High School in Kinston, N.C., in 1952. Following high school graduation, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he participated in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) program for the first three years of his studies. Although drafted into the U.S. Army, West was able to defer his military service to attend medical school at UNC-Chapel. He graduated from medical school in 1959, and began post-graduate training a North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill as an intern in the internal medicine department. After a year of post-graduate training, he switched his specialization to pathology. West completed his medical education under the \"Berry Plan\", a Vietnam War-era program in the United States that allowed physicians to defer obligatory military service until they had completed medical school and residency training. In 1964, West went on active duty in the U.S. Army. He completed an additional month of training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, during which he completed a week of field training at nearby Camp Bullis Military Training Reservation. West then served as a physician at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. During his service, he researched disseminated intravascular coagulation at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. He was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1966. After his military service, West moved to Greenville, N.C., and opened a private medical practice. He would have a lengthy career specializing in anatomic, clinical, and surgical pathology. West married Sarah Elizabeth Moore on August 11, 1956 in Lenoir, N.C.; they divorced in December 1981. At the time of this interview, West was living in Greenville, N.C."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"3 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Summaries"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"All rights held by the State Archives of NC.
