Edwards describing the Battle of Gettysburg and his arduous journey to Winder Hospital. Edwards writes about begging food along the road through Pennsylvania and Maryland and his extreme hunger. He describes the Union artillery at Gettysburg, the Confederate advance, seeing the dead and dying, and helping a wounded soldier get to the hospital. He writes about his own injuries and getting orders for all the wounded who could walk to leave the hospital to travel to Winchester. He mentions soldiers who will soon be home on furlough and wishes he could go too but says \"...it hirts me to see them start and I cant go. if it had been so you or Father could have been hear I could have gone too but let it all pass away I can Stay till the war is ended or till I am wounded a gane or killed far from home without ever seeing those loved ones whos soft hand would seeme so good to a soldiers bleeding wound. I guess it will be a month before I can do duty though I shal return immediately as soon as I get able.
