Correspondence (1840-1848) of Mary concerns death of husband Thomas Rowe Harris Wiggins in Marengo Co., Ala.; her return to Hilliardston; the Alabama plantation and slaves, giving names and ages; settlement of estate; and relatives and events in Alabama. There are a few papers of the girls' guardian Thomas C. Arrington (1853-1861). Papers of the daughters (1852-1927) primarily concern genealogy of the Wiggins, Harriss, Arrington, Crawford, Carter, Baker, and Walton families, and correspondents include U.S. Sen. Isham G. Harris of Tennessee (1895) and Dr. J. M. Walton of Alabama. Walton's letters also describe New York City in the 1890s and include catalog and brochure (1874-1875) of Neophogen College, Gallatin, Tenn., of which he was founder and president. Also undated note describing Washington, D.C., at time of President Lincoln's arrival in Feb., 1861; letter from Comdr. J. B. Coghlan, U.S.S. Raleigh, about gift of silver plate (1899); and papers of the Philomathean Literary Society, Wilmington (1876-1878). Papers of Pattie's husband W. H. McRary, Wilmington merchant and bank director, include letter from Greensboro banker Jesse H. Lindsay, note from S. A.
