Pou in Smithfield, including letter from Pou as Chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee in Johnston Co., recommending statewide strategy against the People's party (Populists) in the next election (1892); and one from O. Max Gardner about his campaign for governor in 1920, with excerpts from speech adout labor organizations. Remainder of letters (1916-1919) concern Pou's appointments by Gov. Thomas W. Bickett as delegate to conferences on commerce, defense, and taxation; relief work in France, including letters in French about conditions there (1916-1917); his speeches on WWI, with praise from many prominent persons including Negro leaders Charles N. Hunter and James E. Shepard; repoted treason by antiwar speakers; and War Savings Stamps, Librty Loans, the Red Cross in Raleigh and Moore Co., Anglo-American relations, and government insurance for soldiers, especially blacks and Indians, with statistics on insurance held by men in the black regiment at Camp Jackson. One letter is from his son in naval reserve officers' training at Annapolis and two are from officers with the A. E. F. in France. Other correspondents include T. W. Bickett, E. C. Branson, C. S. Fransworth, W. P. Few, J. S. Frelinghuysen, F. H. Fries, E. K. Graham, D. H. Hill, Jr., G. W. McIver, S. F. Mordecai, Henry Morganthau, Lee S. Overman, Henry A. Page, Clarence Poe, E. W. Pou, L. D. Robinson and John H. Small. Printed and typescript material includes certificates of appointment to wartime boards, articles and speeches on preparation for war (ca. 1916), the draft, the war effort, and UNC; suggestions for postwar changes in laws; resolutions fo the Wake County Soldiers' Business Aid Committee; and pamphlets on the N.C. Council of Defense, German atrocities, the League of Nations, and taxation of corporate shares (by Walter Clark, 1920). Also the BADIN (Stanly Co.)
