Before assuming his current position in 1997, he gained a broad background in radio broadcasting through his work at Cape Fear Broadcasting Co. and with several radio stations along the east coast. Boyer received an award from the N.C. Associated Press Broadcasters for coverage of Hurricane Fran while working for Cape Fear Broadcasting Co. He earned a bachelor 's degree in speech communications from Edinboro State College.
