State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"By land purchases in 1839 and 1848, John Green Hall put together a plantation of 218 acres of upland with an adjoining 150 acres of rice land at the bluff where Cape Fear River is split by Eagles Island to form two separate river beds, and on Eagles Island itself. Here he raised annual crops of rice until 1862 when, for fear of Federal conquest of Wilmington and its environs, he purchased a plantation in Robeson County and moved there with his family and his slaves. His book, which was subsequently used as a general plantation book, contains tabular reports for the crops at the Bluff plantation from 1850 to 1862.    The tables indicate which of the fifteen rice fields were planted and which allowed to lie fallow. They report, as well, the dates every step was taken in the cultivation of the crop from planting and the \"spring flow\" of water onto the fields to germinate the seed, through weedings, the \"long flow\" to kill off insects and weeds and to force growth of the rice plants, the \"lay-by\" when the field remained flooded so as to support the stalks while the heavy heads of grain filled out, first head, harvest, and yield. In addition to specific information about each year's rice crop, the plan�tation book contains a record of the Bluff plantation slaves, their family groupings, births and/or ages, and allowances of corn meal and issues of clothing and blankets. After the purchase of the Robeson County plantation in 1862, the volume contains data for the produce of 1863, the grains raised and hogs killed in 1864, corn planting notes and cotton division in 1865, and the record of cotton. planted, picked, and baled in 1866. The 1866 entries include the weigh book for cotton picked by individual freedmen.    Hall himself did not return to his rice plantation until 1865, the year of his death.    Other than John Green Hall's rice plantation book, there are no known surviving contemporary records created by any of the antebellum North Carolina rice plantations.
