Henry Toole Clark dated Feb. 3, 1862. Riddick writes that he is an old man in ill health who owns 100 slaves and that his overseer, Richard Barden, has just been conscripted into the Confederate army. He asks the governor to release the overseer from service because the farm produces corn and wheat that goes to feed soldiers and he has no one else to manage it. He states that the war has already done him great damage; he was one of the owners of a line of steam ships that were pressed into Confederate service and two of his own ships have been seized also. This item was scanned as part of the American Civil War Sesquicentennial commemoration at the North Carolina State Archives and are part of the monthly documents on the North Carolina Civil War 150 website (http://civilwar150nc.wordpress.com)."},{"label":"Identifier","value":"SR_341_1_GP_Henry_Toole_Clark_Letters_18620203"}],"description":"Governor's Correspondence: Abram Riddick to Gov.
