These include appraisals, bills of sale, leases for work, and runaway enslaved person notices. The enslaved people named in these documents include Jack, Joe, Primus, Jambo, Claire, and Peter Jonston. One document is a notice written by Stephen Blackman to the sheriff of Dobbs County, North Carolina claiming that a man who stated his name was Peter Jonston was an enslaved man who escaped. Stephen Blackman requested that the sheriff hold the accused man until he could be hanged based on the law. The Shaw family were Scottish immigrants, enslavers, and loyalists with a plantation in Cumberland County and smaller tracts of land in the surrounding counties. The senior Colin Shaw fought with the loyalist militia during both the Regulator Movement’s insurrection and early Revolutionary War. Colin Shaw II, the second born son of Colin Shaw was a lawyer, legislator, and eventual heir to the Shaw family estate. Colin Shaw III was the grandson of Colin Shaw and nephew of Colin Shaw II.
