There are also the lords proprietors' commission and instructions (1667) for the previous governor, Samuel Stephens. Letters from proprietor Sir John Colleton and son concern their plantations managed by Carteret on Colleton Island and Powell's Point and advise the colony to follow example of Barbados, not Virginia (1665-1668). Letter from Sir William Berkeley to the assembly concerns death of Governor Stephens and choice of successor (1669/70). There are covering letters from the lords proprietors (1668-1671) sending the Great Deed of Grant, the Fundamental Constitutions, and approved acts of the assembly, none of which is in this collection except an act against engrossers of provisions (1669/70), but the letters do contain instructions relating to land, the establishment of towns, and a proposed search for overland route to Ashley River settlement. Two letters from governor and council to lords proprietors (1671-1672) complain about the Fundamental Constitutions, especially higher quitrents and reduced powers of the assembly; and there are instructions from the council to Governor Carteret and John Harvey to treat with the proprietors in person (1672). Also in the collection are Carteret's copy of his appointment of John Jenkins as deputy governor in his absence; the report he delivered on his eight-year stewardship of Colleton's plantations (1664/5-1673); comments on the report; and his draft letters to Sir George Carteret expressing desire to return to Albemarle (1674/5). Other correspondents are Capt. John Whitty (1665) and Thomas Eastchurch (1671). These papers have been published in William S. Powell, ed., Ye Countie of Albemarle in Carolina: A Collection of Documents, 1664-1675 (Raleigh, 1958)."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"1 page"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["North Carolina under the Lords Proprietors.
